Design Doing

How might we _____________?

You learn by doing.

Client: The Health Management Academy (and others)

Project Type: Strategic design

Overview:

Our design team was tasked with creating materials for a repeatable workshop format with healthcare executives that would enable diverse stakeholder groups to experience collaboratively working together and building possible solutions to ambiguous problems faced in healthcare. This program has expanded to multiple groups or forums, and encourages participants to learn by doing while capturing insights which are brought back to their organizations. A special component of this program is the relationship building and sharing of stories which are necessary components to strategically align and form teams for the activation of this work.

Responsibilities:

  • Project director, co-lead

  • Creative direction and concept development

  • Content strategy

  • Resourcing and project management

  • (Co)Facilitator and/or emcee

Human-centered-design overview

Alongside the development of the booklet and materials, we created a marketing video used as a ‘starter’ of the session to overview the process and experience.

We get to do this every day. Passing these mindsets on to others, especially in healthcare, is enjoyable to watch and empowering to others. While there are skeptics, i’ve seen this become a bright-spot in someone’s day, or a lightbulb for their career.

Healthcare topics and beyond

There is no shortage of topics and challenges to address in healthcare with design thinking. We’ve successfully adapted the approach to a range of audiences and topics – from workforce shortages and burnout to maternal health or veteran caregiver’s needs.

The format and time-boxed activities were adapted from the Stanford d.school and their famous Wallet exercise - hat tip to them and to my co-conspirator Matt Templeton.
